While many visitors associate our area with beautiful beaches and golf courses, few realize that just west of Myrtle Beach lies one of South Carolina's most extraordinary natural treasures. Lewis Ocean Bay Heritage Preserve, now spanning over 10,700 acres, is home to wildlife and plant species found nowhere else in the world.

This isn't just any nature preserve. Lewis Ocean Bay is where you'll find Venus flytraps growing wild in their natural habitat – a carnivorous plant that exists naturally in only two places on Earth: here in Horry County and near Wilmington, North Carolina. The preserve also shelters the federally-threatened red-cockaded woodpecker, South Carolina's largest population of black bears, and 23 unique Carolina Bays – mysterious oval wetlands that scientists still don't fully understand. A Recent Conservation Win

In June 2025, the preserve grew by 353 acres thanks to a thoughtful partnership between Conway Medical Center and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. Originally planned as the site for a $161 million hospital, this land is now permanently protected, bringing the total preserve size to 10,788 acres.

This expansion represents years of collaborative effort between environmental groups, community members, and local healthcare providers to find solutions that benefit everyone. As Conway Medical Center's CEO Brian Argo noted, "Sometimes the best care we can provide our community is preserving what makes it special."
