As one of the fastest growing areas in the nation, people are moving to the Grand Strand in record numbers (this is included in our article about reasons why NOT to move here).

When I ask people, what brings you to South Carolina, the first answer people give is the weather. They are tired of cold weather and excited to leave their snow shovels behind. To be fair, our summers are hot but our winters are incredibly mild. It only snows once every couple of years and when it does, it rarely sticks around long. Our spring and fall seasons are absolutely gorgeous with May and October being my favorite months of the year.

The next reason to move to the Myrtle Beach area is the people. The pace is a little slower here with genuine southern hospitality. It can be a real culture shock for those coming from the busy northeast. Another aspect of our population that people don’t talk about enough: our diversity. Most people are from somewhere else so you’ll likely find people that are like you. You’re from Pittsburgh? I promise you’ll be able to find a Steelers bar and connect with your tribe. You’re from Ohio and always wanted to pick up saltwater fishing? Go to a local bait shop and you’re more than likely going to connect with someone with similar interests and a similar background. My favorite demographic is and always will be our natives. Sure, we’re going to treat you with skeptism when you see your license plate and probably say Bless Your Heart in a sticky sweet judgemental way. But we’re also going to stop and offer to help when you have a flat tire. We’re going to turn in the lost wallet without taking anything out. At its core, this is still a small town area and people are raised to look out for one each other.

The next and often the biggest reason people move here is the cost of living. That includes everything from affordable homes to lower taxes to cheaper gasoline. Now, this answer all depends on where you’re moving from and what your goals are. If you have a property tax question, we can certainly help run those numbers for you. Here’s an important note- South Carolina taxes separately on personal property including vehicles, campers and boats. Most people save thousands on their real estate taxes and pay hundreds more for their vehicles. Everyone I help is good with that trade off!

The last major reason people choose to call the Grand Strand ‘home' is that there is always something to do. Not only do we have the longest stretch of sandy beach on the East Coast outside of Florida, we also have tons of other things to do. We have world class golf courses stretching from Little River to Pawleys Island. Our restaurant scene is underrated with some of not only the best seafood, but also the best restaurants in South Carolina. Outside the tourist season, locals get to the enjoy the tourist attractions at a discounted rate. There are shows and shopping, thrill rides and excursions for people who live here. We also have the Waccamaw and Pee Dee Rivers along with the Intracoastal Waterway running through our area making this a boater and outdoor sportsman’s paradise. Hunting, fishing and all the other ways to enjoy our natural beauty is a big reason people move here.
