Incorporated in 1964, Surfside Beach earned this distinction through its commitment to quiet neighborhoods, clean beaches, and welcoming atmosphere. What truly sets it apart is being the first official autism-friendly travel destination in the world. In 2016, the town established enhanced accessibility features and sensory-friendly experiences for travelers with autism and other disabilities.

Seven Public Parks: Recreation for Everyone

The town's impressive network of public parks offers recreational activities for all ages and abilities:
All Children's Park (616 10th Ave S) - Features playground equipment made especially for those with physical challenges, with two playgrounds, picnic areas, and restrooms. It's accessible to both physically challenged and able-bodied children.
Bark Park (412 1st Avenue N) - Located next to the library on Pine Drive, this dog park has two enclosed areas for dogs to play—one for large dogs and one for small dogs.
Floral Lake Playground (765 Lakeside Drive) - Offers ADA accessible facilities, picnic shelters, and playground equipment in a scenic lakeside setting.
Fuller Park (Surfside Drive and N Myrtle Drive) - Contains two lighted tennis courts, a playground, and picnic areas with restroom facilities.
Huckabee Recreational Complex (499 Spanish Oak Drive) - The largest athletic facility with three baseball fields, one football field, a tot lot for children 5 and under, picnic shelters, and restrooms. It hosts youth and adult softball programs, youth baseball, and youth football games.
Martin Park (Lakeside Drive and 8th Avenue South) - This waterfront park features two shuffleboard courts, one horseshoe pit, two bocce ball courts, and four picnic shelters, plus the Floral Clubhouse available for rent.
Memorial Park - The newest addition, located beside the public library on Pine Drive, offers a peaceful place for quiet contemplation and nature enjoyment.

 The Surfside Beach Fishing Pier

The 814-foot Surfside Beach Fishing Pier opened on March 14, 2024, after Hurricane Matthew destroyed the previous pier in 2016. The pier offers free admission for walking and sightseeing, with elevator and ramp access. It features Perry's Bait & Tackle Shop, Drippy's Homemade Ice Cream, and will soon have two restaurants. Fishing rates are $12 daily for standard fishing, with children under 12 fishing free when accompanied by a paid adult.

 Beach Features and Accessibility

The town's two miles of pristine oceanfront beaches are cleaned daily and supervised by lifeguards. With 36 beach access points offering showers, restrooms, and handicap-accessible ramps, Surfside Beach ensures everyone can enjoy the coast. Special beach wheelchairs are available through the Public Safety Department, and the town maintains an eco-friendly approach encouraging recycling.
